• New antibiotics ... This picture is taken from the Dr J. Chappell's WEB site at the College of Agriculture's Department of Agronomy, University of Kentucky, KY.  Chappell studies how plants turn on defense genes that produce antibiotic agents. He is also looking at redesigning the enzymes responsible for synthesizing these antibiotics with the goal of generating novel antibiotic-like compounds for possible human medicinal use. In the United States and other countries, the incidence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial and fungal infections in humans continues to rise, prompting urgent appeals from state, national and international agencies for research into and the development of new types of antibiotics
